Keokuk To Track Its Own Vehicles

Keokuk, IA – Keokuk's fleet consists of about 100 vehicles, including police cars and fire trucks.

The city has several employees who handle the maintenance of them.

For the most part, when they work on a vehicle, a ticket is written up and placed in a box.

Alderman Zane Zirkel says that information could be better tracked electronically.

"We could organize better and we could centralize the information," says Zirkel, "we could maintain it better and be more proactive in how we approach fleet management and maybe lower the cost."

Zirkel says an electronic system would also clear up some confusion in the fleet records.

He says at one point, the parks department needed a van to haul prisoners from one site to another.

Zirkel says the records showed three vans were available, but it turned out that they were all the same van already being used.

Zirkel is recommending a system known as TATEMS.

He says the upfront cost would be $700 plus monthly fees and multiple licensing costs.

The Keokuk City Council supports the idea of acquiring the software especially with a money-back guarantee.

Zirkel says he is willing to use some of his vacation time from work to input the information.

He says his goal is to have the fleet data available for upcoming budget negotiations.
