MONMOUTH, IL – Organizer Paul Schuytema wanted to bring his "all-time favorite blues player" to Monmouth's Deep Blue Innovators Blues Festival for years. This year he succeeded in bringing Rory Block to the festival, which is October 29th.
He said, "She is the top female blues artist in the world, in the traditional venue, She's been a mentor to Bonnie Raitt."
Schuytema said Block's music has roots in the pre-depression delta blues. He said she learned the blues from greats such as Mississippi John Hurt and the Reverend Gary Davis.
He said, "Her guitar is just out-of-this-world and her voice is haunting. I'm just thrilled that we've got someone of that stature coming to Monmouth."
Schuytema said Block will perform about 9 p.m. Saturday. Other performers include the Michelle Malone Banned, Paul Rishell and Annie Raines, Blue Mother Tupelo, and Hayes and Fleming.
The blues festival takes place October 29th at the Rivoli Theatre in Monmouth. Doors open at 2 p.m. with performances to begin at 2:30 p.m.
