Keokuk, IA – Theresia Harmon started attending Keokuk City Council meetings during the lock-out of Local 48G by Roquette America.
She says it was during that time, after watching the process, that she decided she wanted to serve.
Harmon applied for the 5th Ward vacancy last summer, but was not chosen.
She says that did not deter her so she filed to run for the open at-large seat.
Harmon says she wants to be a voice for those who do not realize they have a voice, especially lower income residents.
She says the fact that she has never held a political office is a good thing adding that she will bring a fresh perspective to the council.
Harmon says one of her top priorities would be to address a complaint she has received even before announcing her campaign.
She has a problem with the fact that the police department does not have a live person available during the evening and overnight hours.
The front door remains unlocked, but there is no longer a dispatcher in the front office so people must call the jail if they have an issue.
Harmon says the city needs to generate the revenue needed to staff the dispatch area. Her ideas include installing cameras on stoplights to catch speeders or those running a red light.
She says Keokuk should also work to lower electric rates through new technology or other available means.
