Repairs for Historic District Building

Macomb, IL – A rundown building across the street from Macomb City Hall is getting a much needed facelift.

It's difficult to miss the "EAT" sign hanging above the former Maidrite at 232 East Jackson Street. It's also difficult to miss the poor condition of the building.

Joylene Frye -- who said she represents the owner -- shared the repair plans with the Historic Preservation Commission, which approved the repairs this week.

Some of the exterior repairs required HPC approval because the building is in the Downtown Historic District.

Frye said the building has been owned by the same family since 1926. She was asked if they intend to sell it once repairs are completed.

"It just depends on what's going on. You have to have a buyer, and in the meantime we'll just keep hold of it," Frye said. When pressed if it would be for sale if a buyer came along, she replied, "Yes."

Work is being done to the front and sides of the building. Roof work and painting will also be done, though those don't require HPC approval.
