Decision Soon on Former FM School

The Fort Madison School Board could make a decision in January on the future of the district’s former middle school.

A developer has approached the district about a multi-million dollar renovation of the building for apartments.

At the same time, the 65,000 square foot school has garnered the interest of both Fort Madison and Lee County.

Lee County Supervisor Ernie Schiller requested the school board hold off on making a decision until mid- to late-January, even though the county does not know how the building would be used.

One option would be for the Lee County Health Department to use the building if its plans for a shared building with the Lee County Conservation Department fail to materialize.

The school board will not wait that long as it has set a public hearing for Monday, Jan. 7 to gather community feedback.  A decision could be made after that hearing.

The panel, as part of that process, has also approved a resolution expressing its desire to dispose of the former middle school.

A similar resolution regarding the former Denmark Elementary School was tabled.

The two buildings are no longer needed because of the new 4th – 8th grade building in western Fort Madison.
