Initial Offers to Des Moines County

Some Des Moines County employees are looking for significant pay hikes in their next employment contracts.

The county’s correctional officers want 5% for each of the next five fiscal years, starting July 1, 2013 while the sheriff’s deputies are seeking 4% annually during that same time frame.

The maintenance department and most clerical workers in the Des Moines County Courthouse are splitting the difference, seeking 4.5% per year for the next three-to-five years.

The wage increases are included in the initial contract offers from each union to the county.

These union employees also want the county to establish a program where they could voluntarily donate sick leave to another employee who runs out of leave time after a catastrophic event.

They also want to see a program put in place that allows for a personnel file to be cleared for one-year worth of good behavior.

Des Moines County has yet to make an initial contract offer to the unions.  The current contracts expire June 30, 2012.

Talks are already underway between the county and employees in the secondary roads department and the health department.
