Macomb Public Library Goal Within Reach

Rich Egger

The Macomb Public Library is inching closer to the local fundraising goal as part of the plan to build an addition to its Carnegie building.

There's no doubt in my mind that we're going to make it

The library will be awarded a $2.4 million state grant that would cover 75% of the cost of the addition.

It will only receive the money, though, if a total of $794,025 can be raised through the local campaign by June 30.

Right now, the library is short by $125,000.

The grant will be given to another library if the money cannot be raised by the deadline, but Library Director Dennis Danowski is confident that won’t happen.

“We are very fortunate. We’re a grassroots organization, and we’re going to make it. We’re going to make it. There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to make it,” Danowski said.

Danowski accepted a much smaller grant from Secretary of State Jesse White this week. Danowski said the $4,000 grant will pay for books that appeal to junior high school students.

White said he will return to Macomb when the library has reached the fundraising goal.

The fundraising effort is called “Campaign for the Future.”  The co-chairs are Melissa Inman and Judy Kerr.

The addition would double the size of the library.
