More Time for FM Sports Complex

Crews will not have to be in such a hurry to complete the new multi-sports complex in Fort Madison.

The state’s roughly $750,000 contribution to the project came with a completion deadline of this summer.

That was going to be a tight timeline after a lengthy delay, last fall, over environmental work and some changes to the layout of the complex.

Organizers reacted to the delay by applying for, and receiving, an extension from the Vision Iowa Board.

Tim Gobble with Fort Madison Partners says construction must now be completed by the summer of 2015, which is more than enough time.

"You never know what is going to pop up next," says Gobble.  "I did not want to take an opportunity like this and go in front of them once and then have to go back in front of them and ask for another additional extension."

Gobble says despite the extension, construction should be completed before the end of 2014.

Games will not be played until 2015, though, so the soccer/football fields and baseball/softball diamonds have time to take shape.
