A man is charged with first degree murder in a stabbing on the downtown square.
Brandon Whiteman, 21, is being held on $1 million bond at the McDonough County jail.
Police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 100 block of North Lafayette Street at 1:49 a.m. Sunday.
A male victim was found on the ground. He was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to McDonough District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m.
Officers then dispersed crowds from a business in the area with the assistance of the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the WIU Office of Public Safety and secured evidence from the scene.
Another man, later identified as Whiteman, was taken to McDonough District Hospital in a private vehicle for treatment of superficial wounds.
Officers determined there was a physical altercation on the square and that Whiteman was involved.
Additional evidence confirming Whiteman’s involvement led to his arrest after he was released from the hospital, according to police.
The victim’s name has not been released.
