Keokuk to celebrate its 175th anniversary with four days of festivities

The city of Keokuk was incorporated on Dec. 13, 1847. The city will celebrate its 175th anniversary during the upcoming Independence Day weekend.

Mayor Kathie Mahoney said the four-day celebration will offer fun for everyone.

“There's something for everybody,” Mahoney said. “It should be a great weekend for Keokuk.”

  • Saturday, July 1 - Registration for a 5K run and one-mile walks begins at 8 a.m., and the run and walk will start at 9 a.m. The city’s National Cemetery will be open for tours from 1 to 3 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 2 - A fishing tournament will be held at 9 a.m. at the pond at Rand Park. Tours of the historic Miller House and city’s train depot will be given from noon to 5 p.m.  The Keokuk Historical Society will host presentations about Keokuk’s history from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Lodge. Community church choirs will perform from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Monday, July 3 - The Lee County Labor Temple will cook and serve a free pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. The Keokuk Aquatic Center will be open for swimming, free admission, from noon to 6 p.m. More historical presentations at the Odd Fellows Lodge will be given from 6 to 9 p.m. Live music and a boat parade will be held at the Southside Boat Club from 8 to 11 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 4 - The celebration concludes at Rand Park with live music from 5 to 9 p.m. and a fireworks show beginning afterward.
