A potential case of chickenpox at Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg is limiting visits with people who are incarcerated there.
Visits with people in housing 3A and 3B are suspended until further notice as of Wednesday, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
The department said residents of other units may receive visitors if they do not have symptoms that would warrant being quarantined.
Precautions are being taken because the highly contagious varicella virus, which causes chickenpox, could spread rapidly in the facility and can cause severe complications in adults.
IDOC’s Office of Health Services is monitoring the situation and implementing protocols to mitigate any spread of the virus as needed.
