A 19-year-old Monmouth man has been charged with reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence following a deadly, wrong-way crash on Interstate 74 near Knoxville.
Brian J. Boyer was driving a Chevrolet Malibu eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-74 when the vehicle struck a motorcycle around 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, near mile marker 55.
The driver of the motorcycle and motorcycle passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
Boyer was taken to a local hospital with injuries. He was released from the hospital and taken to the Knox County jail.
Judge Andrew Doyle denied pretrial release for Boyle in this case and revoked it in a previous misdemeanor case for possession of alcohol, according to online court records.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 14.
According to online court records, Boyer pleaded guilty to DUI in a separate case in Warren County in May. In that case, he was sentenced to two years of court supervision.
In the Warren County case, Boyer pleaded guilty to DUI with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or more. As part of the plea deal, an additional DUI charge was dropped, along with charges of improper lane usage, illegal transportation of alcohol, and unlawful possession of cannabis.
