Asian as Model Minority? Movie, Popcorn, & Discussion
The acclaimed 2021 documentary by Debbie Lum entitled “Try Harder” will be shown followed by a discussion. The movie chronicles the perspectives of Asian American students of Lowell High School as they apply and seek admission to the universities of their dreams. The mental/emotional strain the elite admission process puts on these students focuses on Asian cultural expectations and calls into question the damaging effects of the “Model Minority” label. Popcorn and soft drinks/water will be provided.
