Exhibition: Phyllis Bramson "Fairytale Trails and Other Fables"

Chicago artist Phyllis Bramson will have a solo exhibition, "Fairytale Trails and Other Fables", on display September 27 through October 28 at the Western Illinois University Art Gallery. This exhibition is partially supported by the Performing Arts Society with an Arts Grant.

A reception for the artist will be held Tuesday, October 4 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. The artist will speak about their work at 5:00 pm.

Phyllis Bramson has been a key voice of her generation that deals with figuration in Chicago. A long-time professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who since retiring, has been advising graduate students at the School of the Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in key exhibitions and surveys at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Institution, and Corcoran Gallery of Art, among many institutions. She has had more than forty solo shows at venues such as the New Museum, New York; Fort Wayne Museum of Art; Boulder Art Museum; University of West Virginia Museum, A survey exhibition at the Renaissance Society, the Chicago Cultural Center’s main gallery; and numerous galleries. A recipient of three National Endowments, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, Artadia: the fund for Art and Dialog Jury Award, Anonymous Was A Woman Award, and selected as one of the Women's Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Awardees for 2014. Bramson most recently curated: What Came After: Figurative Painting in Chicago 1978 - 1998, at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The exhibition and catalog were meant to give work after the Hairy Who and Imagism, a different perspective and also the acknowledgement of “Post Imagism”.
