Junior Master Naturalist day
Junior Master Naturalist day
Prairie Land Conservancy and Illinois Extension Master Naturalists invite junior master naturalists of all ages to participate in a nature learning day at Prairie Hills Wetland Reserve! This Junior Master Naturalist Day on June 19th from 9:30 - 11:30 AM will focus on the Junior Master Naturalist garden that was planted last year. “Students helped plant 138 prairie plants and five trees last summer,” shared Prairie Land Conservancy program coordinator JD Webb. “This year, we got a grant from the Illinois Native Plant Society for native plant signage. They’re small signs so kids can help install them. They have photos of the species and their scientific as well as common names, which will help kids learn the native species in their community. We also need to weed around the plantings to make sure they continue to survive in this public native education garden.” Participants will also have a chance to explore some of the public trails at Prairie Hills Wetland Reserve during the event. This 550-acre property of conserved land is located just off the Illinois River Scenic Byway and has habitat ranging from wetlands to upland prairies. The reserve is even home to an endangered species: the Decurrent False Aster plant.
