Poetry Night - Spoken Word at Night Cap

Poetry Night - Spoken Word at Night Cap

Meet the next four poets from the Iowa Writers' Workshop joining us at Night Cap on Saturday, May 10th from 7-9pm:

Elizander Espenschied brings an acute sensitivity to lyric and language, rooted in his Cleveland upbringing and shaped by a BA from NYU. His work, published in The Weasel, The Greene Street Review, and The Minetta Review. He is currently pursuing an MFA at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Scout Faller, a Pushcart-nominated poet and recipient of the Leijia Hanrahan Scholarship for Communist Women Smokers, lights up the page with work that’s as fearless as it is fresh. Currently pursuing their MFA in Iowa City, they are rarely bored.

Amiya Moretta blends poetry with multimedia art to create immersive, intimate worlds. A Fulbright scholar and a lover of birdwatching, her pups, and gardening, she is also an MFA candidate at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Clay Scofield (they/them), intermedia artist and poet, facilitates play- and process-based collaborations and creates multimedia work that threads poetic narrative, performance and moving image.

Emphasizing the repurposing of material across projects, clay develops an intimacy with objects as they accumulate meaning over time. Slippage and illegibility function in their work to allow forms their own becoming. A word repeated across contexts can become malleable material accumulating various meanings. Inspired by the gutter art and genderqueer performance of Stephen Varble, trash accumulated over time can be repurposed into a sculptural landscape that is transformed through the camera lens.

Clay’s work has been featured in publications including Number, Wussy, and Dinner Bell. They have performed and exhibited nationally and been an artist-in-residence with Cucalorus, the School of Making Thinking, Lazuli, and the JHU-MICA Film Centre.

They hold MFAs in digital art (Indiana University, Bloomington) and poetry (the Iowa Writers’ Workshop) and a BA from Vanderbilt University. Currently Visiting Assistant Professor in Digital Art at Indiana University and Associate Arts Editor for Brink Literary Journal, they live between Bloomington, IN, and Iowa City, IA.

They serve on the board of directors of The School of Making Thinking to support alternative pedagogies and experimental practices through artist residencies.

Don’t miss this chance to hear from some of the most compelling emerging poets in Iowa. Doors open at 6 PM—come early, grab a drink, and experience what’s next in American poetry.
