Election Day is less than three weeks away, but there will be no rush to the polls for thousands of Lee County residents.
Election Coordinator Denise Fraise says the county has received nearly 6,000 requests for an absentee ballot, which is roughly ¼ of the voting population.
She says more than 3,900 of them have already been returned.
Fraise says the pace is not expected to slow down anytime soon as there are now extra opportunities to vote early on the horizon in Lee County.
The North Lee County Office Building and the South Lee County Courthouse will be open on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 3.
Satellite booths will be set up at the Keokuk and Fort Madison HyVees’s on Saturday, Oct. 27, the Fort Madison Public Library on Monday, Oct. 29 and the Fort Madison County Market on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Fraise says the satellite booths will be in place because of petitions filed by State Representative Jerry Kearns and the campaign to re-elect President Barack Obama.
The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office has received more than 250,000 absentee ballots.
