Some reminders from the Illinois State Board of Elections
The state board of elections is reminding the public about proper and legal Election Day behavior.
1. Election officials are your neighbors who work tirelessly to maintain the integrity of our elections. Threatening them is a violation of federal law and undermines our democracy.
2. Electioneering is prohibited within 100 feet of polling places. Places of worship and private schools can opt for a Campaign-Free Zone too! Let's keep our democracy clean.
3. It is forbidden to campaign for elections within 30 meters from the polling stations. Places of worship and private schools can also opt for a Campaign Free Zone.
On Partisan Politics in Non-Partisan Elections
Here's an interesting story from Capitol News Illinois on partisan politics infiltrating local, non-partisan elections.
“We as the Democratic Party of Illinois should be defending Democratic values in every single election in nonpartisan and partisan elections alike, because all of these local offices have jurisdiction over super critical controls and we think our party has the best platform for governance,” Democratic Party of Illinois Executive Director Ben Hardin says in the story.
Locally, the Knox County Democrats have endorsed non-partisan and partisan candidates in a series of Facebook posts.
PACs attack in local mayoral races
Political action committees have been active in this year’s Galesburg and Monmouth mayoral races.
For example, Galesburg residents got text messages yesterday attacking incumbent Mayor Peter Schwartzman. They were paid for by Galesburg Forward, a political action committee formed in 2022 to support local candidates.
The campaign of Schwartzman’s opponent, former mayor John Pritchard, received a $6,000 contribution from Galesburg Forward on March 19. Pritchard’s campaign has also been supported by a $4,000 contribution from Restore Our City PAC and $2,500 from the Realtors Political Action Committee.
Over the weekend, Monmouth residents received mailers attacking five-term incumbent Rod Davies. The mailers were paid for by MIGA PAC, aka Make Illinois Great Again PAC, formed in late 2024 by the same folks who run Campaign Eagle and Forgottonia Times.
In that race, challenger Sean Cavanaugh’s campaign received a $3,000 contribution from MIGA PAC on March 7.
Almost 2,700 Galesburgers voted early
Early and mail-in voting is up in Galesburg this year.
Lisa Watson, executive director of the Galesburg Board of Elections, tells TSPR a total of 2,667 ballots were cast before Election Day.
That includes 1,326 people who voted early in-person and 1,341 mail-in ballots.
Four years ago, when the same races were on the ballot in Galesburg, only 1,464 people voted early. And only 3,849 people voted at all.
Early voting numbers could indicate a better turnout this year, or just a change in voting habits. Time will tell.
Here’s a look at overall voter turnout in Galesburg for consolidated elections going back to 2013.
2023 — 3,589 ballots cast (20.84% of registered voters)
*2021 — 3,849 ballots cast (21.24% of registered voters
2019 — 1,445 ballots cast (7.92% of registered voters)
*2017 — 4,513 ballots cast (24.01% of registered voters)
2015 — 2,713 ballots cast (15.07% of registered voters)
*2013 — 4,783 ballots cast (25.45% of registered voters)
