A semi truck heads south on U.S. Route 67 near Good Hope around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, as captured by an Illinois Department of Transportation traffic cam. Heavy daytime snowfall caused reduced visibility and poor road conditions throughout the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported a winter storm brought a mix of precipitation to all of eastern Iowa, western Illinois, and far northeast Missouri beginning on the evening of Wednesday, February 16 and ending late in the afternoon on Thursday, February 17.

Snowfall totals from the storm vary around the region. The NWS is reporting:

  • Galesburg – 2.1 inches
  • Fort Madison – 3.9 inches
  • Monmouth – 4 inches
  • Burlington – 4 inches
  • Nauvoo – 4 inches
  • Carthage – 5 inches
  • Keokuk – 6 inches
  • Macomb – 6 inches
  • Beardstown – 8 inches
  • Lewistown – 8.2 inches
  • Rushville – 8.4 inches
  • Havana – 9 inches
  • Bath – 9.5 inches

The NWS said a few amounts of 7 to 8 inches were observed over far southern McDonough and Hancock counties, where snow bands persisted longer.
Blowing and drifting of the powdery snow is possible Friday afternoon and night due to strong winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour. The NWS said those who are traveling Friday afternoon or night should use caution and allow extra travel time, especially in open and rural areas.

The agency also said a winter storm will impact the Midwest early next week. But at this time, it’s too early to determine the precipitation type and snow amounts.

Large pileup on Interstate 39

Authorities are cleaning up a mess on Interstate 39 north of Bloomington-Normal after a mid-afternoon crash on Thursday involving dozens of vehicles on the snow-slicked highway.

Illinois State Police say 19 commercial motor vehicles and 9 passenger vehicles crashed and were damaged. Numerous other vehicles slid off in the roadway but were not damaged.

Several truckloads were spilled on and around the roadways.

No injuries were reported.
