Burlington Lowers Speed Limit Entering Town

If you're heading into Burlington on Highway 61 from the South, you'll want to pay extra attention to the signs. The Burlington City Council has approved a change that drops the speed limit to 45 a bit further from town.

Public Works Director Nick MacGregor says they've had problems at the 61 and Mason Road intersection. "It is a noticed intersection where we've had a lot of high rate of speed and instances over the history," MacGregor told council members.

In December of 2019 Burlington elementary school principal Christopher Richards was killed in a crash at that intersection.

MacGregor said the signage has already been moved and a new flashing yellow warning light that is coordinated with the traffic light changes will be installed as part of a traffic signal improvement project along Roosevelt Avenue in the future.

The change went into effect Monday night, March 15, after it was unanimously approved by the council on the final reading of the ordinance.
