Fatal Fire in Galesburg

One person is dead after a fire in Galesburg. The city said the house "...had been placarded as unfit for habitation."

The city said one occupant escaped from the house. That person was life-flighted from OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

The fire department was called to the scene at 261 Pine Street at 1:45 a.m. Sunday. The department said the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The city said the sub-zero temperatures posed additional challenges for firefighters, including higher levels of fatigue, freezing water, and difficulty maneuvering in snow and ice.

The city’s police and fire departments as well as the Office of the State Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.
