Investigation Underway into Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Burlington

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Burlington early Wednesday morning.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the investigation into this shooting, said in a statement that a call came in at about 12:50 a.m. of shots fired near the 300 block of N. Gunnison Street. Officers from the Burlington Police Department and the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Witnesses at the scene said a white pick-up truck was possibly involved in the shooting.

The DCI said Burlington Police located the truck at about 12:57 a.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and Division Street. The truck was stopped near Angular and Summer Streets, roughly one mile from the location of the original "shots fired" call.

The DCI said the driver had a gun and got out of the truck and ran away. Officers chased the driver and a shootout ensued.

The driver of the truck, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was shot and killed. The law enforcement officers involved were not injured. The agency did not say how many shots were fired during the shootout.

The DCI said it will not release the names of the officers until after they have been interviewed by the agency. It said the BPD officers are on paid administrative leave, per department policy. The statement made no mention of whether the sheriff’s deputy was on leave or still on the job.
