Thousands of people have received the COVID-19 vaccine in Lee County, and health department officials said younger people could be eligible to get the shot soon.

Emily Biddenstadt, the Community Health Program Manager, said they've worked their way through around 4,000 people 65 and older who were on the waiting list for the vaccine. March 19th was the last day for that group to get a spot on the list.

She said people 64 and younger could get the vaccine soon if they have certain health conditions, including:

  • Cancer

  • Chronic Kidney Disease

  • COPD

  • Heart Conditions

  • Down's Symdrome

  • Immuno-Compromised State

  • Obesity

  • Pregnancy

  • Sickle-cell disease

  • Smoking

  • Type II Diabetes

Biddenstadt said people 64 and younger shouldn't call to get on the list yet. She is asking them to wait until an official announcement is made.

"We're just trying to encourage everyone to watch our Facebook Page, our Website, and the Media to know when we make that announcement," she said.

The number of positive cases in Lee County has dropped substantially in the past few months. The county’s seven-day average of positive cases is less than 1%.
