Poll: Americans Willing to Defer Tax Cuts
President Bush underscores tax day by renewing his call for another round of tax cuts. Bush wanted $726 billion more in cuts, but the Republican-controlled Congress set the target lower. A poll by NPR, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government indicates Americans don't see a need for more tax relief. NPR's David Welna reports.

Rare American Chestnut Trees Found in Wild
Experts confirm that a cluster of trees found by a scientist hiking near Pine Mountain, Ga., are in fact American chestnut trees. But researchers say they have no idea how the trees escaped a blight in the early 1900s, which experts thought had wiped out the entire U.S. population of the trees.

American Scholar Released from Iranian Jail
An Iranian-American scholar who had been jailed for months in Iran has been freed on bail. Haleh Esfandiari, director of the Middle East program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, was on the way to the Tehran airport in December when she was seized.

Jules Dassin: In Exile, American Became an Auteur
Jules Dassin, an American filmmaker who worked in Europe for nearly 30 years, died this week in Athens, Greece. He left the U.S. in the early 1950s, blacklisted for his youthful membership in the Communist Party.

Cuban-Americans in Miami Expect Little to Change
Miami's Cuban-Americans reacted with a big "been there, done that" Tuesday with the news that Fidel Castro is stepping down as the communist island's president. There were no widespread celebrations, like those that met the news in 2006 that Castro was sick and had handed power to his brother. Many exiles feel little will change anytime soon.

Americans Released By Iran; 3 Arrive In Germany
The four Americans who were part of a prisoner exchange have been released, a senior administration official says, and those who wished to depart Iran have left. A fifth prisoner was also released.
North Korea Detains American Citizen In Pyongyang
North Korea detained a dual nationality South Korean-American as he prepared to board a plane at Pyongyang's airport. It brings the number of Americans known to be in North Korean custody to three.
