The News Leaders Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and other news organizations marked Sunshine Week earlier this month.
The NLA was known as the American Society of News Editors when it launched Sunshine Week in 2005. It’s been observed every March since then.
The goal of the initiative is to promote open government.
As the groups say: It’s your right to know. And even though Sunshine Week has passed, work continues throughout the year to protect Americans’ right to know.
Shop Talk is a weekly panel discussion about journalism issues. This week’s program featured Will Buss, who teaches in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism at Western Illinois University and advises the student editors at the Western Courier and the students at student radio station The Dog: Jessica Martin, who teaches in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism at Western Illinois University and is news director of NEWS3-TV at WIU; and TSPR News Director Rich Egger.
