The Committee to Protect Journalists recently announced four winners of its 2023 International Press Freedom Awards. They come from Togo, India, Mexico, and Georgia (the nation).
The Committee said the honorees have continued to report the news amid government crackdowns, kidnapping, exile, and the rising criminalization of their work.
The Committee to Protect Journalists describes itself as an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide. The group said it defends the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal.
Just a week after the awards were announced, we saw another example of how dangerous it can be to report information in other countries. A national newspaper in Mexico said that one of its reporters was killed. He’s at least the second journalist killed in Mexico this year.
