The International Center for Journalists recently spotlighted a network of female journalists in Africa. They’re led by a Knight Fellowship recipient, Catherine Gicheru, who created the African Women Journalism Project.
The women are credited with producing data-driven coverage of underreported health, gender, and economics issues. They are working in seven countries - Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
They say they aspire to change the narrative that surrounds women. They also hope to increase women’s representation in the news and elevate women as leaders in newsrooms, which are often dominated by men.
Shop Talk is a weekly panel discussion about journalism issues. The program features Dr. Will Buss, who teaches in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism at Western Illinois University and advises the student editors at the Western Courier and the students at student radio station The Dog: Jessica Martin, who teaches in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism at Western Illinois University and is news director of NEWS3-TV at WIU; and TSPR News Director Rich Egger.
