Newspaper Chains to Merge

As reported by numerous outlets, the newspaper chains Gannett and Gatehouse will be merging.  Gannett prints 110 daily papers. GateHouse has 156 papers, including several in this region. The deal will formally close by the end of the year.

The article on the Poynter website quotes Mike Reed. He is the chairman and CEO of GateHouse’s parent New Media Investment Group.  He said, “We believe this transaction will create value for our shareholders, greater opportunities for our employees, and a stronger future for journalism.  Gannett is an innovative, digitally-focused media and marketing solutions company with well-known brands worldwide.”

The Shop Talk panelists discuss their thoughts on the merger and what it might mean for the future of newspapers in this region.

Shop Talk is a weekly panel discussion about journalism issues.  This week’s program featured Will Buss, who teaches in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism at Western Illinois University and advises the student editors at the Western Courier; Jason Parrott, who is Tri States Public Radio’s correspondent based in southeast Iowa; and TSPR News Director Rich Egger.
