West Nile Virus


This year's catastrophic flooding has created hard times for many people in Midwest, but it's created a nirvana for mosquitoes.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDHP) said disease cases from tick and mosquito bites in the state increased 58% from 2005 to 2016.  Director Nirav Shah said simple precautions can help stymie the biting insects.

The McDonough County Health Department said West Nile virus season has arrived.  The agency said there is no need for alarm but it wants people to be aware of the presence of mosquitoes carrying the virus.

The Miller-Hunt Virology Lab at Western Illinois University confirmed that pools of mosquitoes in Macomb and Colchester have tested positive for the West Nile virus.
