Around the Tri States: Mississippi River flood warnings; Monmouth College president wraps up his time in office; Western Illinois projects receive historic preservation grants

Flood warnings along the Mississippi River

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Mississippi River in Des Moines, Lee, Hancock, Henderson, and Clark counties.

The weather service said minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast for Burlington and Gladstone Lock and Dam 18.

In addition, minor flooding is forecast for Keokuk and Gregory Landing.

The weather service expects the river to continue rising through Thursday, July 4, and additional rises are possible after that.
 

Changing of the guard at Monmouth College

This was Clarence Wyatt’s final week on the job as president of Monmouth College, a position he held for ten years.

Wyatt said his presidency focused on the students.

Also during his time in office, the Light This Candle Campaign raised $80 million, which helped grow the college’s endowment

Wyatt was the 14th president in Monmouth College’s history.

He’s being succeeded by Dr. Patricia Draves. She comes to Monmouth after serving as president of Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

Earlier in her career, Draves was a chemistry teacher at Monmouth College.
 

Historic preservation grants awarded in western Illinois

Landmarks Illinois awarded a $5,000 matching grant to the Pike County Historical Society in Pittsfield for a new roof on the Shastid House.

It was built in 1838, making it one of the oldest houses in Pittsfield. Abraham Lincoln visited the home, and it is part of the federally-designated Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area.

Landmarks Illinois also awarded a $2,500 matching grant for repairing the church rectory at Our Saviour Parish and Grade School in Jacksonville.

The residence dates back to 1896.

Landmarks Illinois is a non-profit historic preservation group.
 

Free survivor workshop in Galesburg

WIRC-CAA Victim Services will host a free self-care worship in Galesburg for adult survivors of sexual assault.

The workshop will be on Saturday, June 29.

To protect the privacy of attendees, the time and location is not being shared publicly. To register, call the Victim Services hotline at (309) 837-5555.

The workshop will be hosted by experienced counselors and advocates.
 

Jury convicts Quincy man in meth case

A federal jury found a Quincy man guilty of selling more than 50 grams of methamphetamine on two occasions last year.

Phillip Mayfield, 35, will be sentenced in October.

Mayfield faces at least ten years in prison and could serve up to a life sentence. He also could be fined up to $10,000,000.

He was accused of selling meth to a confidential informant in a Quincy grocery store parking lot in February, 2023, and making another sale of meth to a confidential informant in a Quincy apartment parking lot the following month.

The Illinois State Police West Central Illinois Task Force conducted the investigation with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration Springfield Resident Office.
