A woman is in custody after a fatal hit and run accident on July 4 in Galesburg.

Martha E. Ray, 65, was arrested early July 5 for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Court records show she is charged with aggravated DUI in the crash that killed a Galesburg man.

Police said officers were leaving the area of Lake Storey around 11 p.m. following the fireworks when they found an unresponsive man in the road in the 3500 block of North Henderson Street.

The victim was identified as Eric K. McKinney, 46. He was treated at the scene, then taken to OSF St. Mary Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m.

Police determined McKinney was on a bicycle when struck by a vehicle that fled from the scene heading south.

Officers determined Ray was the driver. She is in custody at the Knox County jail awaiting a court appearance.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin has filed a petition to deny pre-trial release for Ray.

Police say more charges are pending.
