Karen Doubet and Marcy Oglesby both poisoned Richard Young — and they both put his dead body in a box, then locked it in a Maquon storage unit, according to prosecutors.
Charging documents say the two women put eye drops and other medication in Young’s food and drink between June and October of 2021, knowing their actions created a strong probability of his death.
The decomposing remains of Young — a former police chief in the small Knox County village — were discovered in the storage unit on Oct. 7, 2022. He was 71.
Prosecutors believe Young died between Oct. 15 and Dec. 25 of 2021, according to charging documents.
Charges for Doubet, 78, and Oglesby, 52, include murder, aggravated battery with a toxic substance, and concealment of a homicidal death.
Oglesby was initially charged with concealment of a death in 2022, but amended charges were filed four months later. Though the circuit court dismissed the amended charges over speedy trial concerns, the appellate court reinstated them.
Doubet was arrested on a Knox County warrant last week. Charging documents for Doubet and Oglesby are nearly identical, though Oglesby also faces forgery and gun charges.
The women lived with Young in a home across the street from the storage unit and Doubet was a godmother figure to Oglesby, according to law enforcement testimony at a preliminary hearing for Oglesby last year.
Investigators also testified they found receipts from Dollar General for eye drops in the home.
A preliminary hearing for Doubet is set for Oct. 30.
Although she is charged with detainable offenses under the Pre-Trial Fairness Act, prosecutors did not file a petition to detain her.
However, they stipulated she is to undergo a mental health evaluation and have no contact with Oglesby.
A status hearing in Oglesby’s case is set for Dec. 10.
