Around the Tri States: Winter storm likely; New Year’s Eve shooting death in Lewistown; Christmas shooting death in Burlington

Winter storm watch

The entire region will be under a winter storm watch from late Saturday night through late Sunday night.

Heavy snowfall is possible, with accumulations between 4 and 10 inches possible, according to the National Weather Service. (Editor's note: The NWS on Friday afternoon revised the projected snowfall totals to between 4 and 7 inches.)

Blowing and drifting snow is expected.

Travel could become difficult.

Ipava man arrested in Lewistown shooting death

An Ipava man has been arrested and charged in a New Year’s Eve shooting death in Lewistown.

Nicholas Pratt, 33, is also charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and endangering the life or health of a child.

A judge denied Pratt pre-trial release. He is due back in court on January 13.

The Fulton County Coroner’s office has identified the victim as Levi Blair, 39, of Canton.

The sheriff’s department was called to the 500 block of South Main Street shortly before 7 p.m. where deputies found Blair, who had been shot in the head.

He was pronounced dead at Graham Hospital in Canton.

Burlington man charged with murder

A Burlington man was arrested following a shooting on Christmas evening.

Eric Rios, 46, is charged with murder in the first degree in the shooting death of Anthony Campbell, 44.

The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Madison Avenue.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

OSF mask recommendation

OSF Healthcare is implementing a mask recommendation due to widespread respiratory illnesses in the communities they serve.

The healthcare system is recommending all employees, patients, and visitors wear masks in its hospitals, hospice home, and clinics. That includes facilities in Galesburg and Monmouth.

OSF is also implementing a temporary visitor restriction because of respiratory illnesses including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV.

Only two visitors per patient are allowed at a time.

Sandburg student killed in car crash

A Carl Sandburg College student from Kenya was killed in a car accident on Christmas evening near the Quad Cities.

Joan Jepnegetich, 24, was a passenger in a car traveling eastbound on Interstate 80.

Illinois State Police said the car left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a tree. The car then caught on fire.

Jepnegetich was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was a member of the cross-country team at Sandburg.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg.
