An autopsy on Wednesday determined a Colchester woman died from a gunshot wound.
The body of Cheyenna Decker, 23, was found in her apartment at 496 N. Coal St. on Tuesday afternoon by her mother after Decker did not respond to phone calls.
McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout declined to say whether investigators have suspects in mind, but added investigators don’t believe there is a threat to the community.
“We believe that Cheyanna was targeted in some way, and I can’t really elaborate as to why. But as far as the danger to the community, I don’t think so,” he said.
Petitgout declined to say if Decker had been shot more than once.
Petitgout said they have already conducted many interviews, and are hoping for help from the public.
“If you have video surveillance on North Elizabeth Street or North Coal Street, that’s very important to us,” he said.
He also asked for information from anyone who might have seen someone out walking between 10 p.m. Monday and the next morning.
He said tips can be called in to the Crime Stoppers hotline at (309) 836-3222 or the sheriff’s office at (309) 833-2323.
Officers from the sheriff’s office, the Colchester Police Department, the Macomb Police Department, and Illinois State Police are involved in the investigation.
