Galesburg approves transportation contract with Warren County Housing Authority

Residents of Warren County Housing Authority properties will now be able to use Galesburg’s fixed route bus system free of charge through the Galesburg Community Foundation’s Hunger Collaborative.

The Galesburg city council approved a transportation service contract that runs through the end of 2027 and will help address food insecurity and access to healthcare.

It’s similar to an agreement with the Knox County Housing Authority that provides free fixed route bus rides for those residents through the Hunger Collaborative, which has dozens of local non-profit organizations working to address the root causes of food insecurity.

City Manager Eric Hanson said Warren County Public Transportation will get funding under a separate contract with the Hunger Collaborative to transport WCHA residents to Galesburg, where they can use the bus system for shopping, healthcare, and other personal needs.

“It gets tracked and then we’re reimbursed for the rides they take to various places,” Hanson said.

Then Warren County Public Transportation will take residents back to Monmouth.

The Galesburg Community Foundation is committing $25,000 dollars annually for the length of the contract, but the city does not anticipate reaching the maximum reimbursement.
