Oglesby murder trial begins Monday

The bench trial for a Knox County woman charged with murder will begin Monday morning.

Marcy L. Oglesby, 53, is accused of poisoning Richard Young with eye drops and other medication, then hiding his body in a Maquon storage unit.

Young’s remains were discovered in October 2022 following a report of a foul odor during the Knox County Scenic Drive.

Oglesby is charged with first degree murder, aggravated battery by administering a toxic substance, and concealment of a homicide. She waived her right to a jury trial earlier this month.

Oglesby previously reached a plea deal on forgery and FOID violation charges that were severed from the death-related charges on a defense motion.

Karen L. Doubet, 78, also faces charges of murder, aggravated battery by administering a toxic substance, and concealment of a homicide in the case.

She’s scheduled for a pretrial conference on July 7.

Hearing set for Macomb Business Development District

Macomb continues to take steps toward creating a Business Development District.

The city council agreed to hold a public hearing on the proposal. It will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 in council chambers at city hall.

The district would generate extra revenue for Macomb to help fund special projects. The city says the district would also help it address blighted properties.

The city has not determined its proposed boundaries.

State’s attorneys ask to declare weapons ban unconstitutional

Four state’s attorneys from western Illinois are among 35 across the state asking a federal appeals court to have a state ban on certain weapons declared unconstitutional.

They contend the law broadly bans entire categories of firearms that are defined as assault weapons, such as A-R-15 style rifles.

The state’s attorneys for Brown, Hancock, Schuyler, and Warren counties are among those who signed onto the “friend-of-the-court” brief.

A U.S. district judge found the weapons ban unconstitutional last fall.

The state appealed that ruling, and the ban remains in place.
