Western Illinois University says the US Army has reconsidered its plan to shut down the university’s ROTC program.

The decision to inactivate the program was made at the end of June.

In a release from WIU, the university says the change comes after “comprehensive review and consideration of feedback from community leaders and key stakeholders.”

WIU says its ROTC program has been active for more than 50 years and has developed more than one-thousand cadets.

In the release, WIU President Kristi Mindrup said, “We are grateful for all of the advocacy on behalf of our ROTC program. I want to thank our Congressional Representatives who voiced their support, and our Leatherneck community. ROTC is an important part of WIU culture, and the continuation of the program is wonderful news.”
