Bicentennial Reflections – special exhibit celebrates Schuyler County history

The Hub Arts and Cultural Center in downtown Rushville is marking the bicentennial of Schuyler County with the special exhibit “Bicentennial Reflections.”

“It is an exhibit of the history of Schuyler County from the Indigenous people to the present day,” said Erin Eveland, Executive Director of The Hub.

Storyboard panels that are mounted in the center’s exhibit space tell the county’s history, and Eveland said you can also learn about its history by looking down to the floor.

“Our floor is really bad so we couldn’t put stickers on the floor so I had to put down mats,” she said. “There are floor pieces that have an interesting fact about Schuyler County that is an unusual fact that people might not know.”

For example, one of the mats says that prohibition-era Chicago mobster Al Capone visited Browning to go duck hunting.

The exhibit also features artifacts from the county’s history that The Hub borrowed from the Schuyler Jail Museum.

“We put this on in partnership with them. Most of what you’ll see here in on permanent display in the Schuyler Jail Museum,” Eveland said. “So, if this exhibit is something that really interests people, definitely go check out the jail museum too because they have even more things on display.”

Recording stations are also set up at The Hub so that people can record their favorite Schuyler County stories and memories.

The exhibit remains on display through Oct. 31 with extended hours: Tuesday and Wednesday from 1p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.
