Macomb could promote its murals and other public art as part of a marketing campaign.

The city of Macomb is preparing to hire a firm to help market the community.

City leaders heard proposals from seven companies before choosing Spark, a Leap Group company based in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mayor Mike Inman said the city is looking for ways to make people aware of what Macomb offers.

“This is one of the things we’ve struggled with as a community for a decade or longer as things have changed in the community,” he told the city council.

The city council will need to approve the contract once it’s finalized.

Second ward council member John Vigezzi said he supports creating a marketing campaign, and he believes many businesses and residents will, too.

“To do a marketing campaign — whether we’re promoting parks, shopping, restaurants, shopping, cost of living, our citizens — is a great idea to really tell people why they need to come to Macomb,” he said.

The city set aside $25,000 in its current budget to pay for the campaign, and the park district has pledged $20,000.

City Administrator Scott Coker said they’re also working with Western Illinois University, the Macomb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce, the Macomb Area Economic Development Corporation, and the Quality of Life committee to make this a collaborative effort.
