Smithfield Foods has purchased the former Shopko in Monmouth.

Smithfield Foods has purchased the former Shopko building in Monmouth for $1.6 million and plans to use the property for warehousing.

The 60,000-square-foot building at 1190 N. Sixth St. is near Smithfield’s Monmouth pork-processing plant and has been vacant since the Shopko store closed in 2019.

“It’s adjacent to our facility and allows us to achieve new efficiencies by replacing warehouse capacity that was previously handled off premises by a third party,” said Smithfield spokesperson Ray Atkinson.

Hy-Vee purchased the property for $1.3 million in 2020 with plans to open a grocery store there. Hy-Vee later announced it was abandoning the project and would sell the site, despite $1 million in TIF incentives from the city of Monmouth.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher said he expects Smithfield to submit an application for TIF-eligible cost rebates to the city soon.
