For the second time in months, Mayor Peter Schwartzman will appoint someone to the Galesburg city council.
Ward 3 Council Member Evan Miller is stepping down from the council because he is moving outside the city limits.
That follows former Ward 1 Council Member Bradley Hix stepping down for the same reason in September.
Miller won a first term in Ward 3 in 2023, defeating Kevin Wallace, who had been appointed to the seat in 2021.
“Two and a half years ago, I was put in office to represent Ward 3,” Miller said at Monday’s council meeting. “Had no idea that something would come available. Tonight is my last meeting. I have bought a home out in the country. I was born and raised on a farm in Iowa. So I love the country.”
Schwartzman will nominate a candidate to fill the seat. The city council must approve the nomination.
This will be the fourth time in four years that Schwartzman has nominated someone to fill a council seat.
In 2021, he nominated Jaclyn Smith-Esters to fill his Ward 5 seat after he was elected to a first term as mayor. Later that year, he nominated Wallace to serve in Ward 3 after Lindsay Hillery stepped down.
When Hix stepped down earlier this year, Schwartzman appointed Angelica Mangieri to the Ward 1 seat.
