Weather-related announcements for Jan. 23 & 24, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 3:00 a.m. until noon on Friday, Jan. 23. Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero are expected and could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

After that, a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from noon on Friday, Jan. 23 until noon on Saturday, Jan. 24. The NWS said very cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero are expected.

Schools around the region and other organizations are adjusting their plans for Friday, Jan. 23 due to the forecast:

  • The Burlington School District has canceled classes
  • The Central Lee School District will hold a virtual learning day
  • The Clark County R-1 School District has canceled classes
  • The Cuba School District will hold an e-learning day
  • The Dallas City Elementary School District has canceled classes and activities
  • The Fort Madison School District has canceled classes
  • The Galesburg School District has canceled classes
  • Illini West High School will hold an e-learning day; evening activities are canceled
  • The Keokuk School District has canceled classes and activities
  • The Mediapolis School District has canceled classes
  • The Monmouth-Roseville School District will hold an e-learning day
  • The Salvation Army in Macomb will be closed
  • The Schuyler-Industry School District will hold at At-Home Inclement Weather Day
  • All Southeastern Community College sites will be closed
  • Southeastern School District 337 will hold an e-learning day
  • The VIT School District will hold a remote learning day
  • The West Central School District will hold an e-learning day
  • Western Illinois University’s Macomb and Quad Cities campuses will be closed from midnight until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, and both campuses will remain under a winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24. University residence halls will remain open and the dining center will serve brunch and dinner.
