The Galesburg City Council on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Chuck Reynolds to fill the vacant Ward 3 seat.

Reynolds was nominated by Mayor Peter Schwartzman.

He replaces Evan Miller, who was elected in 2023 and resigned after moving outside the city limits, making him ineligible to continue serving.

In nominating Reynolds, Schwartzman told council members Reynolds would be “a positive addition” to the council.

Reynolds is a lifelong Galesburg resident who was born in Galesburg and raised in Ward 3. He is a graduate of Galesburg High School, attended Carl Sandburg College, and works for RFMS Inc.

“He's been involved in a lot of volunteer work in Galesburg over his lifetime and including recently,” Schwartzman said.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the council adopted an ordinance prohibiting parking on the east side of Willard Street from Fifer Street to Yates Street during school hours, citing congestion and safety concerns near Silas Willard Elementary School.

The council also approved the retirement of police canine Zeus, who was purchased by the city in 2019. Zeus assisted the Galesburg Police Department with narcotics detection and evidence recovery.

Zeus’ handler, Officer Jake Taylor, has been reassigned to the Special Operations Unit. City officials said the eight-year-old dog is too old to be retrained with another officer. Zeus will be donated to Taylor.
