The Macomb city council agreed to pay a firm $13,400 to take a look at the condition of Glenwood Pool.
TWM, Inc. will prepare a written report of its findings with recommendations and annotated photos.
Public Works Director Alice Ohrtmann said while closing the pool last fall, the city noticed increased deterioration of the structural concrete underneath it.
She said she isn’t a structural engineer, so an outside firm needs to come in to do a complete evaluation.
“To look at the pool, to look at the underneath structure, to look at the liner, they’re going to look at a lot of the pool, not just the deck,” Ohrtmann said.
She said the evaluation must be performed by an engineer registered with the state, and TWM is the only local firm currently registered.
City council member Dave Dorsett said he’s been through this several times with Glenwood Pool.
“I know what it looks like under there. I knew what it looked like in the late 1990s, and it didn’t look good then,” he said.
Dorsett joined the rest of the council in voting in favor of this expense, but added he would not support any large-scale spending on the pool.
City council member John Vigezzi said he appreciates that Macomb has a pool. He called it a quality-of-life issue.
“I think that the money that we’re spending on this gives us a good idea of what we need to do moving forward,” Vigezzi said.
Ohrtmann agreed that the evaluation will help the city plan for the future.
