The city of Burlington has secured $6 million in federal Community Project Funding for the replacement of the long-closed Cascade Bridge.
The project is estimated to cost $10.5 million and would replace the historic bridge over Cascade Ravine along the Great River Road corridor. The structure, built in 1896, has been closed to vehicle traffic since 2008 and to pedestrians since 2019.
In addition to the federal award, the city has received $1.07 million through the National Scenic Byways Program to support planning and design and $1 million in City Bridge funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation for construction.
“This investment is a game-changer for Burlington,” Mayor Jon D. Billups said in a press release. He added that the funding allows the city to continue moving forward with restoring a vital transportation link.
City officials said the new bridge will provide a safe crossing for vehicles and pedestrians, improve access for emergency services and reconnect portions of Burlington’s park system.
The project is in functional design and environmental review. The city plans to seek construction bids in spring 2027, with work expected to begin shortly thereafter.
