The man accused of shooting two Macomb police officers in Sept. 2024 now faces two counts of felony sexual assault.
Prosecutors had already charged Shaiking Mathis, 39, with multiple counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
The sexual assault charges, filed last week, date back to the same day as the shooting.
Mathis appeared in court this week on the latest charges. He is due back in court next month.
Police were sent to Mathis’ home in the 300 block of North Normal Street on the evening of Sept. 4, 2024 to investigate a reported sexual assault. Police said they announced their presence multiple times before entering the home. The two officers were then shot from inside the home.
Both officers, Detective Nick Severs and Sgt. J.P. McLaughlin, have recovered.
Mathis remained barricaded in his house for nearly 20 hours before he surrendered.
Mathis has been in custody since then after being denied pretrial release.
He appeared in court this week on the latest charges. He is due back in court next month.
