The Galesburg District 205 school board has accepted the retirement of Superintendent John Asplund, who plans to step down in 2027.
The board approved Asplund’s retirement during its regular meeting Monday. His final day with the district is scheduled for June 30, 2027.
Asplund has led the district since 2017. During his tenure, the district carried out major facility upgrades, including renovations and infrastructure improvements at multiple school buildings, and implemented an updated strategic plan to guide district priorities.
In a letter to the board that he read from during Monday’s meeting, Asplund said he was grateful for the opportunity to lead the district.
“Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as the superintendent of District 205 for the past decade,” he said. “We’ve overcome many challenges and achieved many milestones in this time.”
Asplund said he is confident the district’s next leader will be successful.
Board President Courtney Rodriguez said the district will begin a formal search for the next superintendent. The board plans to gather input from staff, parents, and community members as part of the process.
