Local storms included EF-U tornadoes; more stormy weather possible Wednesday

Multiple rounds of storms on Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11 produced heavy rains, damaging winds, and several brief tornadoes in the tri states.

The National Weather Service said Wednesday's storms caused the most widespread wind damage, while Thursday's storms produced heavy rain and sporadic severe winds.

Numerous funnel clouds and four brief tornadoes were reported on Thursday. They did not cause any known damage and were rated EF-U. The U stands for unknown. The EF-U rating is given when a tornado is spotted but there's no damage.

One of the tornadoes was reported near Carthage, another near Macomb. The others were in Washington County, Iowa, and Bureau County, Ill.

The highest rainfall totals reported were:

  • Colchester 4.81 in.
  • Macomb 4.6 in.
  • Bentley 4.43 in.
  • Warsaw 4.42 in.
  • Wayland 4.4 in.
  • Burlington 1.36 in.

The NWS said several rounds of more storms are possible on Wednesday, June 17. Some could be severe. The primary threats are damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes. Isolated flash flooding is also possible.

The strongest storms are expected during the afternoon. The threat of severe weather will diminish into the mid-evening hours behind a cold front.
