The Legacy Theater in Carthage plans building expansion project

The Legacy Theater Foundation is marking the theater’s 10th anniversary by launching A Vision for the Future, a capital campaign to pay for construction of a $2 million building addition.

The theater unveiled the plans over the weekend. The expansion includes:

  • A new, covered, drive-up entrance accessed from College Avenue. The board said it will improve access and safety for patrons.
  • An expanded lobby that will provide space for people to gather before and after shows, and where special events could be held.
  • A multipurpose room that will increase the kinds of events the theater hosts. It will also offer more rehearsal space for children’s theater productions and for dance school recitals.

“This addition will make our theater more accessible, more inclusive, and more responsive to the needs of our audience and community members,” Executive Director Larissa McShane said in a release.

The board said more than $500,000 has already been raised in donations and pledges. The board said pledges can be paid over a three-year period.

The estimated $2 million cost includes an allowance for price increases.

The board will hold public meetings in the region over the next couple months to explain the project and answer questions.

  • Warsaw Library Community Room, 6 p.m., Thursday, June 25
  • Keokuk Public Library Round Room, 6 p.m., Monday, June 29
  • Hamilton Community Center, 6 p.m., Thursday, July 23
  • Nauvoo Community Center, 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20

The building was originally part of the former Carthage College campus. The Legacy Theater held its first show there in June 2016.
