Macomb schools to hike pay for substitutes

Macomb School District 185 had been paying substitute teachers $120 a day. But the Board of Education agreed to increase the pay to $150 per day, beginning in the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Patrick Twomey said the district has struggled to attract substitutes in recent years.

“We did a review of the entire area, and we could see that we were currently on the lower end of what sub pay is,” he said.

Twomey said substitutes are needed every single school day due to illnesses, family emergencies, and for other reasons.

He said some subs are retired teachers, but many others are simply people looking for part-time work.

They must have an Illinois Substitute Teaching License.
